Review of the Travel Mug Black and Decker Coffee Maker
Although the Black & Decker DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker with Travel Mug seems like a great buy for someone who is always on the run, please be aware that according to user reviews, this model has definite flaws. With that, you will notice, however, that a minority seem to love this little model, but have made some accommodations so that this little coffee maker works to its greatest potential. Hence, below you will see both flaws and accommodations discussed so that you get a more rounded picture of this coffee maker. (See also Coffee Maker’s Ratings for details on other coffee makers).
Potential flaw: The Black & Decker Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker with Travel Mug does not brew any faster than other coffee makers. It is actually not designed for speed.
Accommodation: Most users just wait patiently for the brewing to complete.
Potential flaw: The permanent filter does not seem to be able to effectively keep grounds from mixing with the coffee.
Accommodation: Some users have then opted just to use a paper filter in place of the permanent one. This, combined with using only a very small amount of grounds, seems to have solved the problem.
Potential flaw: The recommended amounts of coffee to be used in this maker are greater than what this machine can actually handle.
Accommodation: Most users just simply use less than the recommended amount for a better brew.
Potential flaw: The coffee maker and mug itself are mostly plastic. The travel mug only has an outer layer of stainless steel. Many users complain of the terrible odor/taste produced when this type of material is employed in producing their coffee!
Accommodation: Some reviewers have recommended first washing both the coffee maker and mug with vinegar and water (in addition to washing with soap & water or using a dishwasher).
Potential flaw: The electrical wiring of the maker seems a little odd. If left plugged in, the maker will turn itself on and heat up at various intervals.
Accommodation: Either unplugging the Black & Decker Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker after each use or plugging the unit into a power strip with an on/off switch is recommended.
