Examining Coffee Makers’ Reviews

Let’s sift through some of the most popular reports and coffee makers’ reviews! We’ll take a look at a summary of the information from Consumer Reports, Cook’s Illustrated, and Good Housekeeping. (See also top rated coffee makers). It is interesting to note not only the results of the surveys or reviews, but also the methods by which these companies completed their reports. (See details below).

Consumer Reports Coffee Maker Review

To get started, ConsumerReports.org reviewed 36 automatic-drip models with carafes and four brewing stations that dispense coffee on demand. The overall score for each model is based on brew performance, convenience, and carafe handling. An excellent brew performance rating is awarded to machines that maintain an optimal water temperature of approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit—the best temperature for extracting the most flavor from coffee grounds. Convenience was determined by the ease of filling the water reservoir and filter basket, programming the timer and using the controls, and cleanup. The four top rated models include the 12-cup Cuisinart Brew Central, the Mr. Coffee JWX27, the Zojirushi Fresh Brew’s stainless-steel thermal carafe, and the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT741.

Cook’s Illustrated Coffee Maker Review

Next, Cook’s Illustrated magazine editors evaluated 16 coffee makers in two separate reviews, but in its more recent review of eight models, the highest-rated machine met some pretty impressive standards. Judges found the winner able to brew a pot in almost six minutes, while maintaining a temperature of 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, the carafe kept coffee at the proper serving temperature of 155 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour and brewed a half-pot of coffee without sacrificing quality. Editors assessed the taste of the coffee, the ease of using the controls and carafe, the ease of filling the water reservoir, and removal of the grounds after brewing. The winner was found to be the Technivorm Moccamaster Coffeemaker (found only for an exorbitant price)!

Good Housekeeping Coffee Maker Review

Finally, Good Housekeeping editors tested 15 programmable coffee makers and ranked them from best to worst. The highest rankings are awarded to models that met temperature and brewing time standards. Not only did testers compare coffee makers on ease of use (including filling the water reservoir and filter basket, using the buttons and programmable settings, and handling the carafe), but they also asked a panel to rate each coffee maker’s appearance. So, before deciding which is the best coffee maker, make sure that you have examined how each coffee maker’s reviews were determined to be sure that you are purchasing the BEST coffee maker for you!
